LaKya began her Track career her sophomore year of high school. A former competitive gymnast and varsity basketball player, she decided to take her gifts to the track. Her successful high school career allowed her to be invited to compete in a host of professional track competitions. She soon earned a college scholarship at The University of South Carolina. Kya became the first Gamecock in the university’s history to win back to back SEC Conference Championship. To add to her accolades, Kya became NCAA Champion her sophomore year in the 60m dash, running the time of (7.11). Her Senior year 2011, she rose to the occasion to win the NCAA Championships and broke the Collegiate record time by running a blazing 7.09. Kya then took her speed Outdoors to the 100m and placed 2nd in the SEC Championships. LaKya signed a Professional contract with Saucony, late June 2011. As a professional, she became a 3 time USA Indoor Medalist and was ranked in the top 10 at USA Indoors. LaKya parents were also athletes. Her father, the belated Mitchell Brookins was a former Wide Receiver of The Buffalo Bills Football Team. He had turned down the opportunity to compete under The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, at The USA championship an Olympic year. Her mother, Kymberly, was a nationally ranked competitive gymnast. Her Step-Father, Frank Smith, is an Old Dominion Hall A Famer, Basketball Point Guard.
LaKya says she feels Blessed to be able to take the paths of her parents in pursuing her professional athletic career. Becoming a USA Champion, World Champion and future Olympian is her destiny!
